Sexual assault victims have a right to a rape care advocate.

Unless the victim requires immediate medical attention, they should be afforded the right to a rape care advocate before proceeding with a law enforcement statement or interview and a medical examination (NJSA 52:40-22).

Rape care advocates can:

• Help the victim understand her options
• Provide support and crisis intervention counseling immediately following a sexual assault
• Help the victim navigate the justice system
